Do I Need a LED Spotlight or LED Floodlight For My Outdoor Lighting?

When it comes to outdoor lighting, you want to make sure you’re getting an ample amount of lighting. If you’re trying to decide between an LED spotlight or LED floodlight, it may seem like a difficult decision. The best light for you is going to depend on what you’re wanting your lights to do.

What Is the Difference Between a Floodlight and Spotlight?

While it may seem like there’s not a big difference between floodlights and spotlights, they emit light much differently. A spotlight casts a narrow beam of light usually no wider than 45 degrees. This smaller beam makes the spotlights easier to control and point.

A floodlight, on the other hand, has a beam spread of, at most, 120 degrees. This means that floodlights light up a larger amount of space with the same wattage and lumen output as a spotlight. Since the floodlight spreads out, the light source isn’t as strong as the spotlights light source.

What Are Some Examples Of When A Floodlight Is Preferred?

As mentioned earlier, floodlights feature a beam spread of, at most, 20 degrees. That means that floodlights are typically used to light up a wider distance than the spotlights. If you’re looking to cover a wide area with light, the floodlight is more than likely the choice you need to make. Here are some examples of when a floodlight may be the right choice:

Driveway Lighting

If you’re looking for a light to light up your driveway so you can safely back out of your garage or perform tasks outside at night, a floodlight is the way to go. The spread of the floodlight allows for the entirety of your driveway to be covered in light. Floodlights can also act as deterrents to potential thieves.

Parking Lot Lighting

If you’re looking for parking lot lighting, a floodlight provides efficient lighting, covering a large area. This will allow business goers, potential customers and others using the parking lot to safely navigate the parking lot. It also makes it easier to see people who may be outside of their car.

Other Uses

Floodlights are also used on slow-moving vehicles who perform tasks at night such as roadwork, street-sweeping and so on. They are also commonly used by boats to illuminate underwater areas during rescue operations and general night use. If you’re looking to illuminate a large area, floodlights are the most effective.

When Is a Spotlight Preferred?

Spotlights are typically used to highlight specific small areas or points. The narrow beam allows for stronger light than floodlights but a reduced area of coverage. Spotlights initially originated in the theater world but have become commonly used by home and business owners. Here are some examples of when a spotlight may be preferred”

Inside Your House

It may seem crazy to place spotlights in your own house, but a smaller spotlight can help shine a light on the important features of your house. In recent years, track lights placed in the kitchen have become increasingly popular. These lights allow you to highlight the sink, stove or island.

Outside Your House

Spotlights can also be used to highlight any decor, plants or trees that are outside your house. Spotlighting a tree, for example, can help it become a more impressive part of your landscape. LED Spotlights make it easier to pinpoint certain things outside of your home.
